Taking Care of Business
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. — Colossians 3:23 (NLT)
On the job. It’s where you spend the lion’s share of your waking hours. And, if you work late at night, you might have spent a few of your sleeping hours at work as well. Many men spend more time on the job than they do with their families, enjoying leisure pursuits, or dozing contently in their beds.
This doesn’t need to be depressing. If you can glean as much wisdom, joy, laughter, skill, and satisfaction as possible on the job, you’ll feel better about the hours you put in. Furthermore, if you view God as the One you truly serve, you will find a deeper sense of purpose in your job. And you’ll be more likely to attack your daily tasks with perseverance, creativity, diplomacy, efficiency, and teamwork.
Here are some ideas to make your job tasks a better experience:
- View God as your ultimate boss and strive to serve Him as you serve others.
- Develop an attitude of expectancy about your work.
- Bring skill, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude to your job.
- Pray for the wisdom and grace to deal with challenges on the job.
- Be a good on-the-job ambassador for your faith.
- Be an encouraging, dependable leader, giving extra effort to support those who work with you.
Things to Do:
- Read Ecclesiastes 5:18-19 for a biblical perspective on work.
- Visit a career counselor to help determine if you are in the right job.
- Memorize Colossians 3:23.
